Rats First Week At Home

It’s been a week since Charles and Ted, who are dumbo rats,  joined the At Number 20 gang and this is the post where I tell you just how well they’re settling in. Charles and Ted were born on the 25th October 2018 making them almost 4 months old, meaning they were fully grown when we purchased them. I was absolutely fine with this however, Stewart was terrified of them.

I’ve experienced pet rats before but never had my own to fully reap the benefits of them and so you can imagine that me, being the huge animal lover that  I am was super excited to get them home so I could play with them.

Having spent 3 and a half months in a pet shop you can probably imagine they’re not really into human interaction yet. I do know that rat’s love human companionship so it’s going to take a bit of time to get them to understand I’m just their big cuddle buddy.

They’re not too psyched about being handled yet either, but they do love a good head scrub. Charles is a lot skitter than Ted. He seems t be a lot more distrusting. Ted, however, comes out of his cage on his own and seems to be getting used to all the cuddles that are available to him.

Ted has also taken a huge liking to Alfie, literally, their bond was almost instantaneous and it was so beautiful to watch. They actually also love playfighting with each other and it’s such a heartwarming thing to see that they’re happy enough in their new home to play.

I’m not going to lie, it’s annoying that they sleep so much and I’m hoping their routine will slowly adjust to ours resulting more playtime!

  1. I’m absolutely in love with them. I used to have rats in the past and I will again when I’m having my own flat (my dad doesn’t like rats quite a lot so it’s an issue) but I’ve never had two in the same time – but next time, I’m getting a couple. xx
